Social Structure
The framework of society that surrounds us; consists of the ways that people and groups are related to one another. This framework gives direction to our lives, set limits to our behaviors.
Society
Macro level. Shares culture and territory
Social Class
- A large group of people who rank close to one another in property, power, and prestige.
- Marx emphasized this.
- influences not only our behaviors but also our ideas + thoughts
- Indications of this: house clothing, where they live
Status
- The position that someone occupies in a social group.
- -It can be high, medium, or low
- ex:Professor, president, dean, student of Gettysburg
Role
Associated w/ statue. What is expected of you. The behaviors, obligations, and privilege’s attached to a status
Ex: professor has to grade and perform lectures. Students have to work, study, and show up to class
What are the 2 kinds of statuses?
Ascribed status and achieved status
Ascribed Status
This is assigned to you, usually involuntary. You do not ask for it nor you can choose it. ex:Race, ethnicity, sex, social class of parents,age
Achieved status
Status based on effort, achievement. They are voluntary. Something that is earned and accomplished.
ex: high school diploma
Status set
Combination of all our statuses, either ascribed or achieved.
Master Status
Cuts across the other statuses that an individual occupies
ex: priest, they see what your attire is
Status Symbol
Indicators of a status; items that display a prestige
ex: people wear wedding rings, uniforms, badges that proclaim they are police officers
Status Inconsistency
Ranking high on some dimensions of social status and low on others; also called “status discrepancy”
ex:40 yr old married woman dating a 19 yr old college sophomore. Teachers are highly educated but lower income.
Group
People who interact with one another(2 or more ppl) ; having something in common that matters that interact w/ one another.
