Chapter 4 & 5 Flashcards
Cytoplasm
Fluid or jelly-like mixture of water, sugars, ions, and proteins
Plasma membrane
outer membrane that separates cells contenders from its environment
Organelles
Carry out special metabolic functions inside a cell
Basic structure and function of cell membranes
Selectively controls exchange between the cell and it’s surroundings, mosaic of different kinds of lipids and bilayers
Foundation is its lipid bilayer- two layers of lipids with tails sandwiched between heads
Understand how ATP couples energy release to energy use in metabolism
ATP carries energy but taking energy that has been released by exergonic reactions and delivering energy to endergonic reactions
Diffusion
Some substances can diffuse across lipid bilayer
Passive transport
Many water-soluble substances follow their concentration gradient through interior of passive transporters in bilayer; no energy input required
Active transport
Active transporters in bilayer pump a specific solute through their interior, against its concentration gradient; energy input required
