Chapter 1 Flashcards
Molecule
Atoms joined in chemical bonds
Atom
Fundamental unit of all substances, living or not
Cell
The smallest unit of life. Some live and reproduce as part of a multicellular organism, others do so on their own
Tissue
Organized cells interacting in a specialized function/activity
Organ
Structural unit of interacting tissues. Flowers are the reproductive organs of many plants
Organ system
A set of interacting organs
Multi-celled organism
Individual that consists of different types of cells
Population
Group of single celled or multicellular individuals of a species in a given area
Community
All populations of all species in a specified area
Ecosystem
A community interacting with its physical environment through the transfer of energy and materials
Biosphere
The sum of all ecosystems, every region of earth’s waters, crust, and atmosphere in which organisms live
List complexity of life
Atom, molecule, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, multi-celled organism, population, community, ecosystem, biosphere
Properties shared by all living things
Grow
Require energy
Sense and respond to changes
Reproduce (DNA)
Prokaryotes
Lacks a true nucleus
Single celled
No organelles
Includes producers, consumers, decomposes
Eukaryotes
Posses a true nucleus (membrane-bound)
DNA is inside the nucleus
Most are larger and more complex than the prokaryotes
Domain includes: Protista, fungi, plants, animals
Scientific method
Observe phenomenon Develop hypothesis Make predictions Design and carry out test of predictions Analyze results Repeat tests for consistency Report on tests and conclusions
