Mucous membrane
Composed of epithelium resting on a loose connective tissue membrane called a lamina propria.
Melanin
A pigment that ranges in color from yellow to brown to black.
Cutaneous membrane
The skin

Made mostly of dense connective tissue
Epidermis
Made of stratified squamous epithelium that is capable of keratinizing, or becoming hard and tough.
Exocrine glands
Cutaneous glands that release their secretions to the skin surface via ducts
Follicle
Flexible epithelial structure that encloses the root

Sebaceous glands
Secrete oil
Nail
A scalelike modification of the epidermis that corresponds to the hoof or claw of other animals
Burn
Tissue damage and cell death caused by intense heat, electricity, UV radiation, or certain chemicals.
Sweat glands
Widely distributed. Two types: eccrine and apocrine
Synovial membranes
Line the fibrous capsules surround joints
Serous membrane
Line body cavities that are closed to the exterior
