Chapter 4 Flashcards
Osmosis
The diffusion of water through a semipermeable membrane.
Diffusion
Area of movement from high density to lower density.
Passive Transport
The movement of particles across a cell membrane without the use of energy.
Active Transport
A process of transporting particles that requires the cell to use energy.
Endocytosis
The active-transport process by which a cell surrounds a large particle, such as a large protein, and encloses the particle in a vesicle to bring the particle into the cell.
Exocytosis
When large particles, such as wastes, leaves the cell, the cell uses an active-transport process.
Photosynthesis
Plants capture energy from the sun and change into food with this process.
Cellular respiration
The process by which cells use oxygen to produce energy from food.
Fermentation
The breakdown of food without the use of oxygen.
Cell Cycle
The life cycle of a cell.
Chromosome
The DNA of a cell is organized into this.
Homologous Chromosomes
Chromosomes that have the same sequence of genes and the same structure.
Mitosis
The complicated process by which chromosomes condense and separate.
Cytokinesis
The division of the cytoplasm of a cell.
