Chapter 4 Flashcards
Solutes
The substance dissolved within a solvent
Aqueous Solution
a solution in which water is the dissolving medium
Solvent
The substance of a mixture that is present in the greatest quantity
Electrolyte
A substance whose aqueous solution contains ions
Nonelectrolyte
A substance that does not form ions in solution
Solvation
Helps stabilize the ions in solution and recents cations and anions from recombining
Strong Electrolytes
Completely dissociate in solution; exist in solution entirely as ions
Weak Electrolytes
Dissolve in water to give a relatively small percentage of ions; the ions exist in equilibrium with the unionized substance
Chemical Equilibrium
The relative numbers of each type of ion or molecule in the reaction are constant over time
Precipitate
An insoluble solid formed by a reaction in solution
Precipitation Reaction
Reaction that results in the formation of an insoluble product
Solubility
The amount of substance that can be dissolved within another at a given temperature
Metathesis Reaction/ Exchange Reactions
Involves the swapping of ions in solution; must be driving force for it to occur
Molecular Equation
Shows chemical formulas without indicating ionic character
Complete Ionic Equation
An equation written in form with all soluble strong electrolytes shown as ions
