Chapter 1 Flashcards
Molecules
Two or more atoms joined together in specific shapes
Atoms
The infinitely small building block of matter
Pure Substance
Matter that has distinct properties and a composition that does not vary from sample to sample
Elements
Substances that cannot be decomposed into simpler substances
Compounds
Substances composed of two or more elements; contain two or more elements
Mixtures
Combinations of two or more substances in which each substance retains its chemical identity
Physical Properties
Can be observed without changing the identity and composition of the substance
Chemical Property
Describes the way a substance may change, or react, to form other substances
Intensive Properties
Do not depend on the amount of sample being examined and are useful in chemistry because they can be used to identify substances
Extensive Properties
Depend on the amount if substance; ex. mass and volume
Physical Change
When a substance changes its appearance but not composition; ex. ripping paper
Chemical Change/Reaction
A substance is transformed into a chemically different substance
Precision
Measure of how closely individual measurements agree with each other
Accuracy
refers to how closely individual measurements agree with the correct value
