Chapter 4 Flashcards
what does a spreadsheet contain and why
worksheets - used to present and manipulate data
what are spreadsheets designed for
to allow applications to perform calculations and recalculations automatically
what does a cell contain
a cell has a column reference (a letter) and a row reference (a number)
what ways can cells store data
text, number, date, formula or a reference to another cell
what can spreadsheet data be formatted as
general, number, currency, date, time and percentages
what does cell formatting allow
allows a user to control the contents and appearance of a cell e.g. aligning text, changing the font, adding a border or adding background color
what does conditional formatting allow
it allows a specified format (e.g. cell shading, font colour) to be applied to a cell or group of cells if a specified condition is met
what is data validation
it is possible to control the value input to a given cell/cells by using the validation tool e.g. if a number in a group must be at least 1 and no greater than 10, a range check where values lie between 1 and 10 can be created in the validation criteria
what will pop up if data is not valid
an error message can be set to pop up as a dialogue box to encourage the user to retry entering the valid data
what is a template
a template is a document that has been formatted using a predetermined layout for the user, serves as a starting point for a new document
what is importing data
data can be imported into a spreadsheet from other software sources using a wizard, which guides a user through a series of steps
each step asks a question through dialogue boxes until the data is successfully imported
in some cases the file being imported may have to be in a certain format such as csv before the import process can begin
