Folk Culture
Traditionally practiced in small homogeneous groups living in isolated rural areas, changes little over time, varies from place to place, at the local scale, derived from local natural elements, which is sustainable, anonymous hearth, diffuse slowly, at a small scale, through relocation diffusion.
Popular Culture
Practiced in large heterogeneous societies that share habits despite differences in personal characteristics, rapid changes, varies time to time, at a global scale
Doesn’t reflect concern for the environment, which is unsustainable, traceable hearth, diffuses rapidly, extensively, through hierarchal diffusion.
Taboo
Restriction on behavior imposed by religious law or social custom (Sexual behavior, carries prohibitions, especially in food).
Terroir
Contribution of a location’s distinctive physical features to the way food tastes.
Assimilation
A process of giving up cultural traditions and adopting the social customs of the dominant culture of the place.
Acculturation
A process of adjustment to the dominant culture, while retaining features of a folk culture, or syncretism.
Syncretism
Creation of a new cultural feature through combining elements of two groups.
Landscape Pollution
The environment is modified to enhance participation in leisure activities or promote the sale of a product. The desired result is often the creation of a uniform landscape.
Uniform Landscape
The spatial expression of a popular custom in one location will be similar to another.
Franchise
Company’s agreement with businesspeople in a local area to market that company’s product.
