Chapter 4 π Flashcards
Matter (deffinition)
Matter is anything that takes up space and can be weighed. In other words, matter has volume and mass. There are many different substances, or types of matter, in the universe.
How Does Matter Change From One State To Another?
Matter changes state by adding or removing energy.
Solid - Liquid
Melting.
Liquid - Gas
Evaporation.
Gas- Solid
Deposition
Gas - Liquid
Condensation.
Liquid - Solid
Freezing.
Solid - Gas
Sublimation.
What Is The Particle Theory.
- All matter is made up of tiny particles known as atoms.
- Particles of matter are constantly in motion.
- Particles of matter attract each other.
- Particles of matter have spaces between them.
- As temperature increases, particles of matter move faster.
- Atoms of the same element are identical and atoms of different elements are different.
Physical Properties are?
Characteristic or description of a substance that can be observed (qualitative) or measured (quantitative) without changing the composition of the substance
Colour and Lustre:
the light a substance reflects gives it colour and lustre
Conductivity:
ability of a substance to conduct electricity or heat. A substance that does not conduct is called an insulator and if it does, a conductor
Density:
amount of mass in a given volume (g/cm3 )
Ductility:
any solid that can be stretched into a long wire
Hardness:
substanceβs ability to resist being scratched. Measured on the Mohs hardness scale.
Malleability:
Can be pounded into sheets
Viscosity:
resistance of a fluid to flow
Clarity:
how transparent, translucent or opaque something is.
Chemical propertes are?
The ability of a substance to change into a new substance(s) Can only be observed when a chemical change takes place
Chemical changes always result in the formation of a new substance. The process in which a chemical change occurs is called a chemical reaction.
Examples of Chemical Properties Include.
Absorbs or emits energy during a reaction (light or heat)
Combustibility/Flammability
Decomposition
Forming gases when heated
Reacts with acid/base; water; oxygen
Forms a precipitate (solid) in solution
Carbon Dioxide Will React How To A Gas Test and to limewater.
Flaming splint goes out. And lime water will turn white/cloudy.
How Will Hyrdogen React To A Flame Test.
Flaming splint explodes with a POP!
How Will Oxegen React To A Flame Test.
glowing splint relights
How Will Water Vapour react to a flame test and to lime water
Water vapour will put out a glowin splint but instead of turning limewater white, Water Vapour will turn cobalt chloride paper pink.
A homogeneous Mixture Is?
A mixture with only 1 visible phase.
A heterogeneous mixture is?
A mixture with two or more phases.
A Pure Substance Is?
A homogenous mixture that is either: an element, or a compound.
The smallest part of an element/compound is?
an atom/molecule.
