Chapter 4 Flashcards
What does dissolution mean?
Dissolving
Is water polar or nonpolar?
Polar, Oxygen is negative and Hydrogen is positive
Which is a characteristic of a electronegative in a compound
A more electronegative, negative element
Define solute
Substance being dissolved
Define solvent
Liquid water
Define electrolyte
Substance that when dissolved in water produces a solution that can conduct electricity (only ionic)
What do strong electrolytes do?
conduct current very well. completely dissolves (dissociates) in water
What do weak electrolytes do?
conduct only a small current. partially dissolves in water
What do nonelectrolytes do?
No current flows. Do not dissolve in water
What is Arrhenius’s theory
an acid is a substance that produces H+ ions (protons) when dissolved in water.
How do you find Molarity (concentration)
Molarity= Moles of solute / liters of solution
What does concentrated mean?
A lot of solute in the solvent
What does dilute mean?
Small amount of solute dissolved in solvent
What should you mention in the dilution procedure
Use a pipet to measure water—place it in a volumetric flask. Start with the highest molarity of solute. Measure the solution with the pipet. Add acid to the water. Add tiny drops of water using a dropper until it reaches the hash mark
What are the soluble ions
Group One, Ammonia, Acetate, and Nitrate
