Chapter 4 Flashcards
What is an acid
A chemical that releases hydrogen ions(h+)
How many protons do most acids release, and what are the exceptions?
One, Diprotic acids release 2 and triprotic acids release three
What is a strong acid?
Completely dissociate in water to release (h+)
What are weak acids?
Only partially dissociate to release some (H+)
Will a strong acid have more protons released than a weak acid at the same concentration?
It will have more protons released
What are bases?
They are chemicals that will react with protons released by acids
What are common bases?
Metal oxides and hydroxides
What are alkalis?
Soluble bases thatrelease hydroxide ions when they dissolve in water
Why is water important in the formation of acid and alkalis?
H+ and OH- ions can only be released insolution
What is an amphoteric with example?
Something that can be classed as an acid or a base, water
What is the concentration of a solution
it’s a measure of the amount solute dissolved within a volume of solvent
What is a titrations?
They are accurate procedures that can determine the concentration of a solution
What do oxidation numbers show?
The charge of an atom if all of its bonds were considered totally ionic
What is the exception of the oxidation number on hydrogen?
-1 metal hydrides (LiH)
What is the exception to oxidation state in oxygen?
-1peroxides (H2O2)
