Chapter 4 Flashcards
Custom PCs, NAS
CAD (Computer-Aided Design)
Centered around building 3D models. Need a video card to process images. Need RAM to render 3D models. Need good CPU. Need a solid state hard drive.
AV(Audio Video) Workstation
Catered around computers working around audio and video editing.
Need specialized audio and video card (the exact same thing as a graphics card).
*Need to have dual monitors.
Need a lot of hard drive space.
Virtualization Workstation
The ability to have multiple operating systems on top of another on one physical computer.
Important to have maximum RAM
Need CPU cores→ main two to know.
Each machine requires at least one core.
*You still need large hard drive space
Gaming PC
Used to play and support applications that immerse the user in a gaming experience.
*According to the exam, the only thing specific to a gaming PC is that it has liquid cooling. (EX:
Requires video card
Requires RAM
Requires processor much like all the other computers.
SSD is better for gaming pc)
Thin client
A computer that has the bare minimum hardware to support the OS (operating system) **Most thin clients do not have a hard drive and the OS is accessed remotely. Set programs. (EX: MTA machines. Don’t store any local info. The OS is accessed remotely and you can buy a MetroCard. Needs to be able to take and give money. Will never need to do anything more than process transactions.)(EX: any tiny machines, kiosk machines, vending machines, etc)
Thick client
A computer that has all standard hardware installed as well as local OS and apps.
*Literally a regular computer.
Network Attached Storage (NAS)
is a device that allows the centralized storage of hard drives.
Used for sharing files and photos. Has media streaming.
Need Gigabit NIC card.
RAID array configuration. (Is a hard drive that you can share with an entire network.)
Need a networking card. Contains IP address on it.
