Chapter 3b Flashcards
Sedimentary rocks
- They are formed from particles of pre-existing rocks or previously dissolved material or biological activity
- 75% of land and almost all of the ocean floor is covered in sediment or sedimentary rocks,
- Sedimentary is the only place you can find fossils or fossil fuels
Thanks for the flashcards :)
Keep being awesome.
What process makes Sedimentary rocks?
Chemical and mechanical weathering; break up of rock
Lithification is the process then to cement or compaction the particles together
What is chemical weathering?
Soluble material carried by running water
-Temperature or chemical change —> Deposit —> Lithification
Waht is mechanical weathering?
Solid particles moved by wind, water, ice, etc.
-Carrying agent loses velocity —> Deposit —> Lithification
What is a detrital sedimentary rock made of?
Solid particles from other rocks
What is a chemical sedimentary rock made of?
Previously dissolved or biological activity*
*missing something in my notes..
What is an organic sedimentary rock made of?
Plant material
-coal
Detrital is classified by what?
Particle size Largest- Boulder\ V Cobble \ Gravel V Pebble / V Granule/ V Sand - 1/16 mm to 2mm V Silt \ Mud V Clay/ Smallest
