Chapter 3a Flashcards
Igneous rocks are made of?
Lava- surfaced magma that has cooled and crystallized
What does it mean if a rock was cooled Intrusively?
Cooled and solidifies within the Earth
•Plutonic
•Large crystals
What does it mean if a rock was cooled Extrusively?
Cooled and solidified at or near the surface
•Volcanic
•Fine-grained crystals
What are the six Igneous textures?
- Phaneritic
- Aphaneritic
- Porphyritic (DOES NOT mean porous)
- Vesicular
- Glassy
- Pyroclastic
What is the definition of Phaneritic?
Coarse-grained
What does Aphaneritic mean?
Fine-grained
A Vesicular texture is cause by what?
Escaping gases
A Glassy texture is cause by what when forming?
Very fast cooling during volcanic eruption
What does Pyroclastic mean?
Fused particles from volcanic eruptions
“Fire particles”
What is Lithification?
Cementation and compaction
What are the four Igneous Compositions?
- Felsic (Granite)
- Andesitic (Intermediate)
- Mafic (Basaltic)
- Ultramafic (mostly found in the mantle)
What are some examples of Felsic rocks?
*May not need to know?
- Granite
- Rhyolite (basically pink)
- Obsidian
- Pumice
What are some examples of Andesitic rocks?
*May not need to know?
- Diorite
* Andesite
What are some examples of Mafic rocks?
*May not need to know?
- Gabbro
- Basalt
- Scoria
