Q

What is gas

A

General adaption syndrome (selyes)
Bio model invoking 3 stages of Physio reactions that a person experiences when responding to persistent stress
- explains stress in bio perspective

Q

Alarm subdivisions and definitions

A

Shock: decrease bodily arousal for brief period following initial stress exposure
- react as though injured as bio process is bellow normal, body temp blood pressure and muscle tone momentarily decrease
Counterhsock: sympathetic response mobilise body to respond to stressors (enegise body
Marked beginning of increase resistance to stress continues in next stage

Q

Resistance

A

Maintain high bodily arousal in response to persistent stressor
- increase cortisol to keep above normal ability to deal with stress , suppress immune system function decreasing resistance to stress in futur
- adaptive to ohysio changed in countershokc increasing hormone lvl and bodily arousal
- sympathetic response decrease intensity as body stabilises to internal environment
Still able to cope with

Q

Exhaustion

A

Depletion energy and bodily resources causing inability to cope w stressors
- stres hormones and cortisol have been prolonged present suppressing immune system
- cause Physio and psych illness and susceptible to serious chronic illness like cardiovascular

Q

Eh if selyes stages : car crash after attempting to merge

A

Shock: freeze behind wheel
Countershock: sympathetic response increase heart rate and energy
Resistance: headaches but can cope and work
Exhaustion: can’t pay insurance stopped work from fatigue

Q

GAS explanatory powers

A

Successfully explain stres response in terms of physiological reaction in presence of stress useful explaining bio process
Strength:
Recognise pattern of Physio resposne associated with stages and sub stages measured in individuals
Recognise chronic stress and illness relationship
Objective empirical info about bio process involves in stress response
Weakness:
Based on rat study reduce generalisability to human population
Ignore psychological factors like cognitive and affect
Fails to show subjective nature, as ppl have dif stress responses
