What was the Cold War? Why was it cold?
It was called the Cold War because of the threat of nuclear weapons.
What is the arms race?
Who can build the biggest best weapon.
What is Mutual Assured Destruction
It’s mutually destroying each other in the case of the USSR and the US, since if one dropped a nuke, the other one would drop full scale nukes.
What is a superpower?
Powerful nations that r world dominant
What’s containment?
It was an attempt by the US to keep a monopoly on the nuclear threats, and to restrict soviet expansion of weapons.
In the Butter Battle Book, what does grandpa/van itch symbolize?
Army and military.
What is the yalta conference?
A meetup between Winston Churchill, prime minister of Britain, Stalin, the leader of USSR, and Franklin Roosevelt. They agreed to collaborate in reshaping Europe from WW2.
What was the Potsdam conference?
Another meetup between the three but instead of Franklin Roosevelt it was Harry Truman, the new president of the US.
What was the Truman Doctrine?
A speech by the prez of US about how he wanted communism to stop spreading. He wanted the new countries to choose their own gov.
What were the Marshall and Molotov plan?
A plan by each country (US is Marshall and USSR is Molotov) to aid countries that were of their governments, respectively. They each wanted the countries of the new Europe to choose a side.
What does communism believe?
The government has all power, and since gov has all power, there are basically no social classes, everyone is equal.
What does democracy/capitalism believe
Wants people to have almost all power, and to have equal chances. There are social classes.
What happened to Germany after the World War Two?
It was split into four territories, each country of the allies had one territory. Three of the allies, however, wanted to combine their territories, and make a new improved Germany, but the soviets said no, and built what we know today as the Berlin Wall. The soviets were greedy.
How many losses of life in the war did each country suffer?
Soviets suffered 20 million and 13 million soviets jews were killed because of the holocaust. The us only, respectively, suffered 290,000 deaths, and the us economy boomed during the war.
