What is running used for?

What is gathering used for?
To make a wide piece of fabric fit a narrow one.
What is back stitching used for?
A strong stick which can be used instead of machining to sew seams.
What is top sowing used for?
Used to join finished edges together.
Ha is is the chain stitch used for?
It is used for outlines.
What a re the parts of a sewing machine?
Spool pin, stitch width dial, hand wheel, buttonhole dial, stitch length dial, foot pedal, presser foot, nedle, take-up lever, tension slot, tension dial, thread guide.
What are the types of machine stitches and what are they use for?
Straight Stitch: Seams to apply waistbands and sow hems
Zip-zag Stitch: Finishing seams, sewing stretchy fabric and appliqué
Blind Stitch: Hems and decorative stitch
Buttonhole Stitch: Making buttonholes
Embroidery Stitch: Decorative work
How do you use a sewing machine?
- Thread the machine
- Adjust stitch length and tension to suit the fabric
- Test stitch on a scrap of paper or fabric
- Press lightly on the presser foot to to start sewing
- If need to stop in middle of line or to turn a corner leave the needle in
- At the end of a line go over the last few stitches to secure it.
- Raise the needle and lift the presser foot to remove the fabric.
What should you consider before choosing a sewing machine?
- Cost of machine
- If it’s easy to use
- What stitches and special features you need
- What attachments and extras are included
- If it has a reliable brand name
- The after-sales service an guarantee
What should we do to care for a sewing machine?
- Follow instructions for use and cleaning
- Do not run a threaded machine without fabric
- Cover when not in use to avoid dust
- Oil moving parts occasionally
- Have machine serviced regularly
What are the machine faults and possible causes?

What is a flat seam and what is it used for?
The basic method to join two fabrics together.
What is edge machining and what is it used for?
Sewing light and medium weight fabrics together.
What is zig-zag machining and what is it used for?
Use for sewing two pieces of fabric together leaving a zig-zag pattern
What is tacking used for?
- Hold 2 fabrics in position while being stitched
- To hold a garment together when fitting
- As a guide for a machining
