What does bereavement mean?
when the owner suffers more from the death of their pet because of the many roles the pet had for the owner
What are the stages of grief?
Denial bargaining Anger Depression Resolution
What is denial?
a normal defense mechanism that buffers humans from some unbearable news or reality
The client will move out of this stage when they are ready.
What is bargaining?
when the client shows various impotent attempts to control or reverse the reality
Example: seeking to replace the lost animal without grieving at all is a form of bargaining
What is anger in the grief process?
a process that clients will move in and out of
- anger will show up in a variety of ways such as guilt, complaining about disease not found soon enough, blaming someone else (vet, vet tech)
What is depression in the grief process?
mood may be described as complete, overwhelming sadness, appetite is changed, energy level is lowered, the client withdraws from others; sometimes client is unable to go to work. Other symptoms - irritability, sleep irregularity, restlessness, and inability to concentrate
What is resolution or acceptance?
marked by the belief that everything is ok, normal functioning is restored and emotional energy is reinvested
