Chapter 35 Flashcards
What is immunity?
The ability of the body to destroy organisms or toxins that tend to destroy the body organ or tissues
What is innate immunity?
They immunity present in an organism by birth
What is acquired immunity?
The immunity acquired by an organism over the course of life due to exposure to different types of organisms and toxins
What does innate immunity consist of?
Phagocytosis
Skin
Acid in the stomach
Certain chemicals like
-Lysozyme
-Complement complex
-Basic polypeptides
-natural killer lymphocytes
What are the types of acquired immunity?
Humoral community
Cell mediated immunity
How does acquired immunity starts?
Only by the exposure with antigens
What are the characteristics of an antigen?
It should have a molecular weight greater than 8000 and it must have epitopes which are regularly recurring molecular groups that gives its stereochemical properties
What is clone of lymphocyte?
All the different lymphocytes that are capable of forming one antibody or T lymphocyte
How are clone of lymphocyte is activated?
Lymphocytes have surface receptor proteins that bind to antigen and signals for further proliferation of lymphocytes
Macrophages phagocytose antigen, and partially dissolve it, and present the products to the lymphocytes by cell to cell connections to stimulate the clones
It also release IL-1
Helper T lymphocytes can further stimulate B lymphocytes by releasing lymphokines for proliferation
