Chapter 34: Parenteral Medications Flashcards
Identify three factors to consider when selecting a syringe & needle.
Type of medication; depth of tissue; volume of prescribed drug; viscosity of drug; size of client
Name three ways. That pharmaceutical companies prepare/ supply parenteral drugs.
Ampules, vials, prefilled cartridges
Discuss appropriate actions before combining two drugs in a syringe.
Consult a drug reference for compatibility
List four injection routes.
Intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous
Name the five intramuscular sites.
Dorsogluteal, ventrogluteal, rectus femoris, deltoid, vastus lateralis
Describe how to correctly mix insulin types.
- roll the vial of insulin containing an additive b/t palms
- clean the rubber stoppers of both vials of insulin
- Instill an am today air equal to the volume that will be withdrawn from the vial containing the insulin w/the additive; do not insert needle into the insulin itself
- withdraw the needle and use the same syringe to repeat the previous step, but this time invert & withdraw the prescribed # of additive-free insulin units
- ask another nurse to check the label on the insulin & the # of units in the syringe
- swab the rubber stopper of the other vial & pierce it with the needle of the partially filled syringe
- ask another nurse to check the label & the # of units in the syringe
- administer within 15 min of mixing
Discuss why most insulin combinations must be administered within 15 min of being mixed.
So that they act as if being objected separately
Describe two techniques to prevent bruising when administering heparin subcutaneously.
Rotate sites; do not aspirate
Identify three parts of a syringe.
Plunge, barrel, tip
