Chapter 3.3 Chemical Compounds in Cells Flashcards
What is an element?
An element is any substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
What are the elements found in living things?
The elements found in living things carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur.
What is a compound
two or more elements that are chemically combined
what are the three things water helps do in a cell
keep size + shape
keep temperature from changing rapidly
dissolves chemicals that cells need
what is a carbohydrate made of
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen
what do carbohydrates do
carbohydrates store energy for the cell
what are some examples of carbohydrates
potatoes, pasta, rice, bread
what is a lipid made of
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen
what are the three categories of lipids
oils, fats, waxes
what do lipids make up
lipids make up most of the cell membrane
what are proteins made up of
carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sometimes sulfur
what are examples of proteins
meat, eggs, fish, nut, beans
what do amino acids do
amino acids link chemically to form protiens
what are enzymes
an enzyme is a type of protein that speeds up chemical reactions in cells
what does DNA help do
carries info and passes it along to offspring
directs all of the cell’s functions
