Compare and contrast the political philosophies of all of California’s governors since Ronald Reagan. To which party did each belong? In your view, which of these governors was most successful in achieving his public policy goals?
Edmund “Jerry” Brown. Elected governor in 1974 & ‘78 during economic hard times, an “age of limits.” Also served as Oakland mayor & state Attorney General. Supporting environmentalism, gay rights, & the usual liberal causes, Brown was elected Governor again in 2010 during another age of limits caused by huge budget deficits.
Explain the roots of California’s “tax revolt” of the late 1970s. Explain the major provisions of Proposition 13 and discuss its impact on California and the nation.
Massive cost of living rise. Increase in property taxes. Anti-government mood. Property taxes were limited to 1% of assessment value. Passed with 65% of vote. Spending cut, user fees increased. Public growth temporarily constrained.

8 & 22: Affirmed traditional marriage.
140: Term limits for state legislators.
184: 3 strikes and you’re out.
209: Affirmative action banned.
