Define serious mental illness (SMI)
KNOW THIS!!!
Group of psychiatric conditions, that can significantly affect functioning & one’s quality of life, especially if left untreated
- most are primarily biological in origin
Examples of serious mental illnesses (SMIs)
- Mood disorders
- Personality disorders
- Psychotic disorders
- Subtypes of schizophrenia
Young people with SMI
- Cyclical in nature (cycles of quick treatment, brief recovery, nonadherance, & relapse)
Additional Problems:
* Increased frequency of relapse
* Legal difficulties
* Homelessness
* Substance use
* Unemployment
* Poorer long-term prognosis
Older Adults with SMI
Before deinstituionalization, psychiatric hospitals were long-term residencies
- Patients became dependent on services & structure & were unable to function independently
Current Challenges:
* Inadequate housing
* Inadequate diets
* More of a physicla toll
* Medication-induced medical conditions
What is rehabilitation & what does it focus on?

- Managing the patient’s deficits
- Helping individuals learn to live with their illness
Teach patients how to manage their illness / problem & focuses on the patient’s deficits

- Rapid placement in job preferred by the patient
- Continuing individualized support on the job
