Chapter 3.2 Atoms into ions Flashcards
What type of bond is the share between electron?
Covalent bonds
What type of bond is the transfer of electrons?
Ionic bonds
What happens to an atom when it gains an electron?
The atom forms a negative charge.
What happens to an atom when it loses an electron?
The atom forms a positive charge.
What happens to metal atoms when they react with non-metal atoms?
The metal atoms tend to lose electrons when they react with non-metal atoms and the non-metal atoms tend to gain electrons.
Which group do the elements in group 1 react with? Why?
The elements in group 1 react with group 7 elements.
As they react atoms of group 1 elements can lose on electron to gain the stable electronic structure of a noble gas. This electron can be given to an atom from group 7 which then also achieves the stable electronic structure of a noble gas.
