Chapter 3.1 States of matter Flashcards
What is the particle arrangement in a solid?
The particles in a solid are packed closely together and vibrate around fixed positions.
What is the particle arrangement in a liquid?
The particles in a liquid are also closely together but can slip and slide over each other in random motion.
What is the particle arrangement in a gas?
The particles in a gas have, on average, lots of space between them and zoom around randomly.
What is transferred in melting and boiling?
Energy is transferred from the surroundings to the substance.
What is transferred in freezing and condensing?
Energy is transferred from the substance to the surroundings.
Name a property of a solid, liquid and gas.
Solid- has a fixed shape and volume.
Liquid- has a fixed volume but they can flow and change their shape.
Gas- has no fixed shape or volume and can be compressed easily.
