Introduction to the criminal justice system
The criminal justice system
The criminal justice system is a set or processes and institutions used to enforce criminal laws and determine criminal cases
2 main purposes of criminal justice system
- decide whether an accused is guilty
- impose a sanction where accused has been found guilty
3 main stages of criminal justice system
- Investigation stage: investigation of an offence and charge of an accused
-the determination stage: involves the courts deciding whether the accused is guilty and what sanction will be imposed - correction stage: involves overseeing any sanctions imposed, such as imprisonment, as well as post-sentencing procedures

a set of rules and principles that guide the way Australia is governed
Commonwealth offences
crimes that break a law passed by the commonwealth parliament. commonwealth offences have expanded overtime. many of the commonwealth offences are set out in the commonwealth offences are set out in the commonwealth criminal code, which is contained in a statue

a law made by parliament

prosecution: the party that institutes criminal proceedings against an accused on behalf of the states
