what is pneumoconiosis
general term for a group of lung diseases caused by inhalation and retention of mineral or metal dust particles
what is the literal meaning of pneumoconiosis?
“dust in the lungs”
what is silicosis?
type of pneumoconiosis occuring from inhaling silica from sand and rock.
what is the presentation of silicosis?
short of breath, fever, cough, weight loss
what is asbestosis?
type of pneumoconiosis, asbestos is a group of minerals composed of microscopic fibers, used for insulation. asbestos causes chronic lung inflammation. can cause lung cancer there is a lapse of 15 to 19 years between exposure and cancer
presentation of asbestosis?
short of breath, dry cough, chest pain, weight loss, clubbed fingers
what is coal miners pneumoconiosis?
“black lung” is caused by inhalation of coal dust. the substance is ingested by macrophages which releases substances that cause cell injury or death.. fibrosis occurs from tissue repair after inflammation resulting in pulmonary fibrosis
presentation of coal miners pneumoconiosis
sob, chronic cough, black or grey expectorant
nursing care/responsibilities r/t environment lung diseases?
educate PPE
encourage regular medical check ups
prevent, monitor, control symptoms
acute care may require o2 therapy, iv fluid, percussion therapy, inhaled bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and NSAIDS
