Nutrients
Substances found in food that provide energy, regulate metabolism, and help with growth and repair of body tissues
Whole grains

Nutrient density
a measurement of the amount of nutrients and calories in various foods
Calorie
The amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature of one gram on water: used to measure the energy value of food and cost of physical activity
Adipose tissue
fat cells in the body
Carbohydrates
a classification of nutrients containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen; the major source of energy for the human body
Fats
A classification of nutrients containing carbon, hydrogen, some oxygen and sometimes other chemical elements.
Proteins
a classification of nutrients containing complex organic compounds containing nitrogen and formed by combinations of amino acids; the main source in the body used to repair and build tissues
Vitamins
organic nutrients essential for normal metabolism, growth, and development of the body
Minerals
inorganic nutrients essential for normal body functions and found in the body and in food
Water
the most important classification for essential body nutrients, involved in almost every vital body process
