Chapter 3 vocab Flashcards
All parts of Earth in which life exists.
Biosphere
Interactions among organisms, population, and communities and their interactions with there environment.
Ecology
A group of similar organisms that can bread and produce fertile offspring.
Species
A group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area
Population
Assemblage of different populations that live together in a defined area.
Community
Organisms that live in a place, together with their physical environment.
Ecosystem
Any living part of the environment with which an organisms might attract.
Biotic factors
Any non-living part of the environment.
Abiotic factors
All the gases that surrounds Earth.
Atmosphere
All of Earth’s fresh water, and salt water, including water vapor and rain in the atmosphere, water underground an dice.
Hydrosphere
All of the rock at and below Earth’s surface.
Geosphere
Patterns and averages of temperature, precipitation, clouds and wind over many years.
Climate
Short-term changes in temperature, precipitation, clouds, and wind from day to day/ minute to minute.
weather
Process in which certain gases, (carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor trap) sunlight energy in Earth’s atmosphere ASL heat.
Greenhouse effect
Ecologists typically classify the homes of organisms into toughly ten different regional climate communities.
Biome
Tall trees from a dense, leafy covering.
Canopy
In the shade below, shorter trees and vines from a layer.
Understory
Material formed from decaying leaves and other organisms.
Humus
Evergreens along the northern edge of the temperate zone.
Taiga
A layer permanently frozen subsoil.
Permafrost
The sunlight region near the surface in which photosynthesis can occur.
Photic zone
Below the photic zone.
Aphotic zone
Microscopic organisms that live in the aquatic environment.
Plankton
An ecosystem in which water either covers the soil or is present at or near the surface for at least part of the year.
Wetland
A weather formed where a river meets the sea.
