Chapter 3 - Vessels Flashcards
1
Q
What chamber is super strong?
A
The left ventricle
2
Q
Define an artery
A
- thick and muscular to withstand high pressure blood being pumped out of heart
- elastic walls absorbs pressure normalizing the blood pressure
- recoil of artery assists in blood movement
3
Q
Are aterioles smaller veins or arteries?
A
arteries
4
Q
What is this describing?
- thin walled
- low pressure draining blood back to heart
- veins run inside skeletal muscles
- when they contract they squeeze the blood, propelling it - has valves to prevent blood from drain back down if it has to go upward
A
veins
5
Q
Venules are what?
A
Smaller veins
6
Q
Define capillaries
A
- numerous small
- thin walled
- lowest pressure of the blood
- to maximize exchange

Q
Bonus Cards
What is the SA Node?
A
The SA Node is the natural pacemaker of the heart. It is made up of a bundle of nerve cells.
It fires 70x a minuet. The S and A stand for sinoatriol. Its function is to send a wave of nerve impulse through the atria causing contraction.
8
Q
Still Bonus
What is this*
-fires when wave from SA Node reaches it
-sends impulse down the purkinje fibers down the septum, up the ventricles causing them to contract
A
The AV Node, which stands for atrial ventricular node
