Chapter 3: Tissues Flashcards
Name the 3 germ layers
Ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm.
Ectoderm eventually becomes
Epithelial and nervous tissue
Mesoderm tissue eventually becomes
Connective and some epithelial tissue
Endoderm tissue eventually becomes
Epithelial tissue inside the body (liver and pancreas)
Layer of cells that cover exposed surfaces or line internal passageways
Epithelium
Secretory structure derived from epithelium
Gland
True or false, epithelial tissue is avascular
True
Transitional cells
Cells that are able to morph, found in organs that stretch (e.g. bladder)
Layer of the basal membrane that restricts movement of proteins and is produced by epithelial tissue
Basal lamina
Layer of the basal membrane that provides strength and support and is produced by underlying connective tissue
Reticular lamina
Where can simple columnar epithelium be found?
Lines stomach and gallbladder
Where can simple cubodial epithelium be found?
Kidneys
What are the functions of simple squamous epithelium?
Reduces friction, controls vessels permeability, absorption and secretion
What are the functions of stratified squamous epithelium?
Protects from abrasion, pathogens, and chemical attack
Where can transitional epithelium be found?
Lining the kidneys, bladder, urethra, and uterers
