Large composition of chorus, vocal solos, and orchestra (just like an opera), no acting scenery or costumes, based on biblical stories but are not intended for religious services, today performed in concert halls and churches, a succession of chorus, arias, duets, recitatives, and orchestral interludes which tell a story, first appeared in Italy as a musical dramatization of biblical stories and were performed in prayer halls called oratorios, audience was made up of public, example Messiah by handle, secular
