Chapter 3 - Subsidary Airframe Structures Flashcards
Passenger Cabin Windows
- 3 Layers
- Made from acrylic
- Middle and Outer layer can both take full pressurisation if one fails
-Can withstand 1.5x normal operating pressure.
Eye Reference Position
The flight crew must adjust seats to the design eye point.
3 Balls in the centre of the cockpit. Only 2 should be viewable when correctly sat.
CS25 - Requires aircraft to be fitted with aids to ensure good eye position.
Front Cockpit Window makeup?
Glass Layer
Vinyl (Conductive coating)
Glass Layer
- Front window is the thickest.
- Vinyl catches any glass shards.
Side Panel Window make up (Cockpit)?
Stretch Acyclic
Phenolic Spacer
Stretch Acyclic
CS25 - Windows cockpit windows rule?
Must be a direct vision window capable of being opened in flight when the aircraft is unpressurised.
The front cockpit window can withstand up to a ___ Lb bird impact.
The front cockpit window can withstand up to a 4 Lb bird impact.
Flight Deck Windows Must have:
- Excellent optical qualities
- Must be able to seal for pressurisation
- Be able to handle large temperature differences
- Be able to absorb impacts without failure.
- De-icing / De-misting capabilities
- Shouldn’t bend excessively when heated (Mailable) Somewhat flexible to help absorb impacts.
Red Flag through inspection window?
Door Unlocked (Unpressurised)
Green Flag through inspection window?
Door Locked (Pressurised)
Cargo Doors characteristics?
- Usually hinged along their top edge and open directly outwards and upwards.
How are Cargo Doors secured?
- By over-centre locks and pressurisation interlocks.
- Sealed with inflatable seal or rubber cuff.
What is a Plug Door?
- Access door which uses tapered edges to fit snugly in tapered door frame.
- When closed the door must first come inwards then outwards.
- Unless depressurised the door CANNOT be opened (Even in emergency evacuations door must first be unpressurised).
Over Wing Exit Doors
- Some Hinge outwards
- Require complex latching and locking mechanisms to ensure they can withstand pressurisation force, and not be opened unnecessarily.
Light Aircraft Doors
Often hinged on forward edge in unpressurised aircraft.
- If door is accidentally left opened, the natural airstream should keep it near closed.
Light Aircraft Floor
- Can be formed as an integral part of the shell halves which make up the fuselage
- Can be part of the wing surface which travels through the cabin
