Indian Removal Act
All Indian tribes in the East had to move to the lands west of the Mississippi River. Many promises made to the Indians were broken. Missions on the reservations forbade children to speak in their native language and students were encouraged to be “Americanized.” Tribes like the Kickapoo and Delaware became known as “emigrant Indians.”

The Oregon Trail
The Oregon Trail served families wanting to make a better life in the West. It was a difficult journey - wagons tipping over, disease, poor sanitation, gunshot wounds, and a lack of experience and supplies often killed them before the got to their destination.

were built to house soldiers who would keep the peace between traveling settlers and the American Indians
The Santa Fe Trail
This route was important for entrepreneurs. Since it brought in many traders, the New Mexican government welcomed it. The Spanish did not want outsiders, but when Spanish territory was overthrown by Mexico, they began to welcome outside trade from the Santa Fe Trail.
Corps of Discovery
The purpose of the Corps of Discovery was to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean.
