Chapter 3: Stoichiometry: Calculations with Chemical Formulas and Equations Flashcards
3.1: Chemical Equation
A representation of a chemical reaction using the chemical formulas of the reactants and products; a balanced chemical equation contains equal numbers of atoms of each element on both sides of the equation.
3.1: Reactants and Products in a Chemical Equation
The chemical formulas to the left of the arrow are the reactants. The chemical formulas to the right of the arrow are the products.
3.2: Combination Reaction
Two or more reactants combine to form a single product.
3.2: Decomposition Reaction
A single reactant breaks apart to form two or more substances. Many compounds react this way when heated.
3.2: Combustion Reaction
Rapid reactions that proceed with evolution of heat and usually also a flame; most combustion involves reaction with oxygen, as in the burning of a match.
