chapter 3 - states of matter Flashcards
what are the particles in a solid like?
fixed shape & volume
what are the particles in a liquid like?
expands to fill the shape of the container.
can flow easily and change shape.
what are the particles in a gas like?
can easily be compressed
free to move
no fixed shape
How do you turn a solid to a liquid?
melting
how do you turn a liquid to a solid?
freezing
how do you turn a liquid to a gas?
boiling
how do you turn a gas to a liquid?
condensing
When metals bond with non metals, the metals loose electrons and become ____ charged ions.
positively
Non metals gain electrons and become ______ charged
negatively
What is an intermolecular force?
forces that exist between molecules
what is metallic bonding?
delocalised and free moving electrons between layers of metal ions.
why is a metal ductile?
metal can be drawn into wires, the delocalised electrons allow the ions to move.
why is a metal malleable?
It can be hammered into different shapes, the atoms can slip past each other without bonds
why is metal a thermal conductor?
Heat is transferred quickly across the metal because delocalised electrons are free to move around and carry charges.
why is a metal lustrous?
Metals are shiny and reflect light readily to prevent light entering the electron.
