they were established framework to study human speech segment

what is a constant in sound?
A
- a constant is a speech sound that is not a vowel
- for example: e, i, y, a, u, o

what are voiced sounds in speech?
A
voiced sounds are when they make your vocal chord vibrate

what are voiceless sounds in speech?
A
- they are sounds that are produced from air passing through the mouth at different points
- eg. sss & fff

A
- bilabials (constants, both lips - bob & pop)
- labiodental (from teeth, lower lip, - fat & vat)
- alveolar (tongue, behind upper teeth - size)

A
- dentals (tongue & teeth - thin & three)
- interdentals (tongue tip b/w teeth - thus & than)
- palatals (alveolar ridge meets palate - shout, church, judge, yoyo)
- velars (back of mouth/velum) - kick, gag
- glottal (vocal chords & larynx - have, who)
