Who served as the link between the Sumerians and the gods?
Priests. People relied on them to help gain the gods favor. Priests interpreted the wishes of the gods and made offerings to them.
Describe cuneiform
The worlds first system of writing. Symbols were used like letters, they could represent basic parts of words. They wrote with styluses on clay tablets.
What did Sargon’s empire have in common with other Mesopotamian city states?
They fought with surrounding city states to try to gain farmland and things like that.
Why did city states fight each other over farmland?
They needed it so they could produce more crops. They could expand their farms.
Why did Mesopotamia build canals?
They brought water to farmer’s fields. So places wouldn’t flood and so places had enough water.
What 2 land features gave Mesopotamia its name?
The Tigris and Euphrates river. Mesopotamia means “between the rivers” in Greek.
What resource was Phoenicia well known for?
Cedar trees were prized for their timber, a valuable trade item.
What did both Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar both do?
They both ruled the Babylonian Empire and controlled the land.
Why were ziggurats so tall?
So they would be more attractive. They put columns. They wanted them to be the most impressive and tallest buildings in Sumer
What technology did the Hittites and Assyrians use in battle?
Iron weapons and chariots. The Hittites mastered iron working so they could make the most powerful weapons of their time.
What is the relationship between trade and the Phoenician alphabet?
They were both big accomplishments for them. They helped them survive. They both inspired people today.
