Magna Carta
The “Great Charter” signed by hated King John in 1215 that put the King under law and established freedoms for English people (e.g., trial by jury, no taxation without representation, etc).
Mayflower Compact
An agreement among 41 Pilgrims on the Mayflower for maintaining law and order after they landed in Massachusetts in 1620.
unicameral
a one-house legislature (law-making group), like early PA had
bicameral
a two-house legislature (law-making group), resembling the structure of British Parliament.
Intolerable Acts
British Parliament’s laws/acts passed to punish the colonists in 1774 for resisting British laws.
House of Lords, House of Commons
The two houses of English parliament that legally represented the English people. Lords was the upper house for nobility; Commons was the lower house for representatives of the common people.
House of Burgesses
The first representative assembly for the colonies set up in Jamestown in 1619.
