Chapter 3, Section 2 Flashcards
describe gas behavior
behaves differently than solids or liquids because of space that exists between particles
what factors does gas behavior depend on?
temperature, volume, pressure
temperature
a measure of how fast the particles in an object are moving
temperature properties
the higher the temperature the faster the particles move, also the higher the energy of particles
volume
the amount of space and object takes up
what does the volume of gas depend on?
the container the gas is in
pressure
the amount of force exerted on a given area or surface
what do gas behavior laws show?
the relationship between temperature, pressure, and volume
describe boyle’s law
at a constant temperature, increasing the pressure of a gas will decrease the volume of the gas. visa versa. This shows an inverse relationship.
example of boyle’s law
a-high altitude balloons can be filled with small volumes of helium. As the balloon rises in the atmosphere, the air pressure around it decreases allowing the helium gas to expand. The way the balloon teaches heights before popping
b-as one pushes on the plunger of a bicycle pump, the volume inside the pump cylinder gets smaller increasing the pressure which forces air into the tire
describe charles’ law
at a constant pressure , an increase in temperature of a gas will increase the volume of the gas(flexible container). It has a direct relationship.
charles’ law examples
a-increasing temperature of a gas in a balloon and the balloon gets bigger
b-heat a tire and it will expand
