Chapter 3: Representations of Data Flashcards
What is an outlier?
✯ Outlier: An extreme value that falls outside the data set.
What are the two tests for outliers?
✯ Quartiles Test
✯ Mean & Standard Deviation Test
in terms of limits, how do we justify outliers?
✯ Any data value > upper limit is defined as an outlier.
✯ Any data value < lower limit is also defined as an outlier.
What should I look out for when comparing data?
✯ When comparing data, a measure of location and a measure of spread should be compared interpreted in the context of the question.
When can we use information to draw a histogram?
✯ Grouped continuous information can be represented in a histogram
How do we find the median, lower quartile, upper quartile in a histogram?
Q2, Q1, Q3
✯ Use linear interpolation
If the mean>median, what does that mean in terms of the distribution?
✯ Positive Skew
If the median>mean, what does that mean in terms of the distribution?
✯ Negative Skew
When the data is skewed, which is better mean, mode or median?
✯ Median as it not affected by extreme values.
