- People wanted to travel and thought of the crusades as an adventure.
- They felt like it was their Christian duty to obey the Pope who had urged them to go.
- They felt like it was their Christian duty to make sure that fellow Christians were able to reach the Holy Land without harm or danger.
- The Pope said that if a person went on the crusades, their sins would be forgiven.
- They wanted to win praise and be called a hero

Why did people want to become a monk or a nun?
A
- They wanted to get to heaven: They believed that becoming a monk or a nun was the surest way to heaven.
- They wanted an education: Since monasteries and nunneries sold their own materials and were funded, they were able to afford fine libraries and entertainment.
- They wanted to live a quiet, peaceful life: Monasteries and nunneries were located far away from noisy towns and villages which were often dangerous.

- Chasity : they weren’t allowed to marry.
- Poverty : They had no private property of their own
- Obedience : They had to follow the rules and always obey the person in charge (An abbot or abbess.)
