Why did people want to become a monk or a nun?

A
  • They wanted to get to heaven: They believed that becoming a monk or a nun was the surest way to heaven.
  • They wanted an education: Since monasteries and nunneries sold their own materials and were funded, they were able to afford fine libraries and entertainment.
  • They wanted to live a quiet, peaceful life: Monasteries and nunneries were located far away from noisy towns and villages which were often dangerous.
