Chapter 3 - Procrastination and memory Flashcards

1
Q

Visual and spatial memory system: why we have it, how can we use it?

A

Our ancestors were forced to memorize where they are/were for being able to return from 3day deer hunt.
Make a very unusual memorable visual image to the concept/… you want to learn.

Q

Why is imagining/an image so important?

A

Visual areas of the brain have enhanced memory abilities. If you try to learn something that doesn’t make any sense, it’s easier if you use the best part of brain what you have for memorizing.

Q

When is the best time for last practice per day?

A

Before going to sleep, as during sleep the brain reorganizes and does a fragmentation of neuron structures, it builds up the necessary bridges and removes unneeded information. It also repeats patterns and pieces together solutions.

Q

What is the meaning of hippocampus and what role does it have in long-term memory?

A

Hippos: horse, campus: sea monster.
Hippocampus enables storing memories/facts/events in the cortex. This process, aka memory consolidation can take years. If the hippocampus gets damaged, the person can not remember the events/facts from the past years before the fallout and cannot make new memories.

Q

Are memories static?

A

No, they are living, always changing. With every recall a reconsolidation takes place. Also fake memories can be created, simply by imagining and suggestion. This is esecially easy to do with children having a vivid imagination.

Q

What is a glial cell? What is an astrocyte?

A

Glial cells are supporting cells in the brain. Several types exist, one of them are astrocytes. Astrocytes provide nutrients for the neurons, maintain extracellular ion balance and are involved with repair following injury. They also have an important role in learning: mice provided with human astrocytes learn faster.

Q

Why is procrastination a bad habit?

A

Shares features with addiction, offers temporary excitement and relief from boring reality.

Makes you come up with stories/ irrational xcuses why you don’t /can’t learn today/that material.

Procrastinating is like taking arsenic for longer period of time, every day a little bit.

Q

Habits and zombi mode - how do these relate?

A

Zombi mode or habit: you don’t need to think when doing it(only maybe a few key factors, but no 100% attention) It’s a mental energy saver.

Habits have 4 parts:

  1. Cue or trigger
  2. The routine that we start when we are having the cue.
  3. The reward - immediate little feeling of pleasure. (This is why procrastination is such an easy to maintain habit)
  4. The belief - this is the heartbeat of a habit. Change the belief and your habit will change.

Q

What is the difference between product and process? On wgich should you focus? Why?

A

Focus on process in order to reframe mind from inner talks like: 8 cannot do it, i don’t want to do it,… instead, just commit to 25 min pomodoro, nothing more.
Product is the outcome (e.g. 5 pages summary of book).
Process means: flow of time and habits and actions associated with that flow of time.

The product is what teiggers the pain that causes you to procrastinate.

The zomby habitual part of brain likes processes because it can mindlessly march along. Zombies help with the process but not with the product.

17
Q

What categories of cues exist?

How to handle damaging cues?

A

Location, time, how you feel, reactions (to other people, or something that just happened.

> problems with procrastination: automatic habit, you don’t even notice when you’ve started with it.
shut down everything when starting to learn
have a plan to avoiding damaging cues: go to silent room, go to library, leave your phone in the car,…

18
Q

Define some meaningful rewards for your new learning habit!

A

Feeling smarter and mentally vigilent.

Set deadline for when to leave the office.

19
Q

What is the most important belief for new learning habit?

What can reinforce that?

A

I can do it! I can finalize it and be a smart guy/gal

Hang out with people who have a can-do philosophy!

20
Q

How to accomplish dream of “learn course xy“.

A

  • plan quitting time
  • slice the elephant
  • plan healthy leasure time/activities during and after your working time
  • eat the frog in the morning

  • keep an eye on the learning goal.
21
Q

What happens if you don’t write down your to-dos into a list?

A

They lurk at the edge of your 4 slots of working memory and occupy valuable mental real-estate
