Chapter 3: Probability and applications Flashcards
1
Q
what is ‘realisation’?
A
the observed outcome
2
Q
what are contingency tables
A
the data counterparts of probability tables. where the probabilities are replaced by frequency
3
Q
how can we measure probability: explain the terms symmetry, long term relative frequency, population proportion, subjective assessment and a statistical model
A
- symmetry: knowing that we have a deck of 52 cards, since half are red, the other half must be black
- long term relative frequency, we repeat the experiment multiple times
- population proportion: collect sample and note how many have the trait so we can generalise to the population
- subjective assessment is expert advice
- a statistical model is collecting data and following a model and check information from the model
