a pattern of thinking, feeling, and responding
Self-perpetuating cycle
a chain of events that repeats itself and is very difficult to stop because it has the power continue built into the cycle itself
Positive Attitude
work hard, achieve success, feel more positive
negative attitude
complaining drives away others, causes person to feel negative
Mindfulness
thinking about your own thoughts and feelings
Mental health
describes the overall condition of your social and emotional well-being
What does mental health depend on?
how well you deal with feelings about yourself, others and the world
Defense Mechanism
unhealthy methods people unconsciously use to deal with life situations
Direct attack
recognize the problem, make a plan to solve it
Compensation
focus on your strengths, not weaknesses
Self-talk
little messages that you send to yourself
Stress
your body’s response to demanding life events that cause tension
3 types of stress
- Routine Stress
- Transitional Stress
- Stress from traumatic events
Routine Stress
comes from the demands of everyday activities
Transitional Stress
comes during processes of growing and developing
Traumatic Events
are serious, usually negative, life changes that cause emotional upset
Fight-or-Flight Response
produces stress hormones to give the body increased strength and speed
Stress Hormones
Chemicals that cause the heart to beat harder and faster, open wide the airways to the lungs, increase metabolism, increase the flow of blood to the large muscles, and suppress the immune system
Chronic Stress
stress that doesn’t go away
Physical effects
high blood pressure, heart attacks, stomach ulcers
Emotional Effects
tensions, anxiety, and anger
Relationship effects
difficulty forming strong relationships, poor decision-making, abuse
