What is Percussion?
Tapping the body surfaces and hearing the resulting sounds.
What does Percussion determine?
The presence of air and solid masses affecting internal organs.
When is Percussion the most useful?
When assessing the condition of the chest and abdomen.
What are the four terms commonly used to describe percussion sounds?
Tympanic, Resonant, Hyper and Dull.
What does Tympanic describe?
Drum-like sound found in areas full of gas of the stomach.
What does Resonant describe?
Hollow sound found in normal lung tissue.
What does Hyper describe?
Loud, booming sound found in lung diseases such as emphysema.
What does Dull describe?
Thud like sound heard over solid organs like the liver.
