What is the main responsibility of the skipper?
The skippers main responsibility is the safety of the crew and the boat.
Can the skipper delegate responsibility?
No, duties can be delegated but responsibilities can not. The skipper is responsible for the actions of the crew.
Why is maintenance important?
Because a poorly maintained yacht can be unsafe (first and foremost) and is not a pleasure to sail. It also affects the resale value.
What’s the responsibility of the crew?
To follow commands and assist the skipper.
Who does the PCOC (Pleaser Craft Operator Card) apply to?
The PCOC applies to all persons who operate a powered watercraft with any size or type of motor ( including a sailing vessel with a motor)
What’s the difference between a lifejacket and a PFD (personal flotation device)?
Both will make you float but only the lifejacket will quickly turn you on your back to keep your face out of the water.
When should you wear your PFD?
Whenever you are on deck.
What is the purpose of a safety harness?
The purpose of a safety harness is to prevent a crew member from falling overboard.
When should a safety harness be worn?
•When the weather is rough
•When you are sailing alone
•when travelling at night or in reduced visibility.
What is a radar reflector?
A radar reflector helps fibreglass or wooden boats be seen on another boats radar.
What are soft wood plugs for and where should they be stored?
Soft wood plugs are used to seal holes in the hull in case of a through-hull failure. They should be affixed to the through-hull fitting with a line or soft wire.
How long are approved distress flare valid for?
They are valid for 4 years after the date of manufacturing.
