Chapter 3- parts of the brain Flashcards
Where is the frontal lobe?
largest lobe, sits in most anterior part of the brain behind the forehead
What are two key functions of the frontal lobe?
1) activating and controlling both fine and complex motor activities (speech)
2) controlling human executive functions
executive functions
problem solving, planning, organizing, sequencing, reasoning, social awareness, decision making
Where is the parietal lobe?
posterior to the frontal lobe on the left and right sides above the ears
What are the key functions of the parietal lobe?
1) perceiving and integrating sensory and perceptual information
2) comprehending oral and written language and mathematical calculations
Where is the temporal lobe located?
sits posterior to the frontal lobe, but inferior to the parietal lobe (medial to the ears)
What are the functions of the temporal lobe?
Particularly important for communication- contains the auditory cortex
Heschl’s gyrus
aka. Auditory cortex, located in temporal lobe, conducts fine-grained analysis of the frequency spectrum, temporal properties, and periodicity of sounds received from auditory pathways
Wernicke’s area
located in temporal lobe, highly specialized for language comprehension
Where is the occipital lobe located?
at the rear of the cerebral cortex, in front of and above the cerebellum
What is the function of the occipital lobe?
Receives and processes visual information
Broca’s area
located in posterior portion of the left frontal lobe, responsible for fine coordination of speech output
