Chapter 3- Mix up your practice Flashcards
What is massed practice?
It’s focused, repetitive practice of one thing at a time.
When practice is more effective?
When it is broken into separate periods of training that are spaced out, interleaved with other learning.
Why is spaced practice more effective than massed practice?
New learning requires a process of consolidation, in which memory traces are strengthen, given meaning and connected to prior knowledge. Rapid-fire practice leans on short memory.
Why interleaving is seldom used?
The learning from interleaved practice feels slower than learning from massed practice.
What is varied practice?
It’s using different kinds of practice engaging different parts of the brains. It helps to build the broad schema.
What is interleaving?
It’s switching from two or more subjects during practice.
